Boyzone: No Matter What

Series Director

New Sky Original series, Boyzone: No Matter What, charts the story of one of the world’s biggest boy bands, in their own words

For the first time in 30 years, band members Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch and Michael Graham grant rare and exclusive interview access for this three-part Sky documentary series. Revealing their personal experiences in a band that sold over 25 million records worldwide, the boys also talk candidly about how they grappled with the true cost of global fame. To help close a chapter in their lives, they confront the strained relationships and tragic events that have had a lasting impact on all their lives, families and friendships.

No Matter What is one of the best pop documentaries I’ve ever seen. This superbly knitted three-part documentary reminds you that Boyzone had a touch of Shakespeare about them. There’s fun, rivalry, secrets, all the ups and downs as they soared, split, and reunited more than once. There’s the tragedy of Stephen Gately’s death from a congenital heart condition. And there’s Louis Walsh. – The Irish Examiner

While a three-part series on a boy band from the 1990s might not seem like an urgent addition to your watch list, it is better than your average pop doc, mainly because all the interviewees are so honest, often self-deprecatingly so. Gately died tragically young, aged 33, from an undiagnosed health condition in 2009 (there was crass, untrue speculation at the time that he had died from drugs), but the other four band members are generous interviewees. These four, three of whom meet up at the end for a Guinness, seem kind, down-to-earth people who got caught up at tender ages in the fame trap. That here they make themselves so vulnerable for the camera, egos set aside, makes them even more likeable. The Times ****

Boyzone: No Matter What review – the scenes about Stephen Gately are truly poignant – The Guardian ****

It’s gripping, gruelling stuff – a pop pile-up that you can’t look away from. – Irish Times

Boyzone: No Matter What, review: Louis Walsh is the ghastly villain in this sobering tale. The Irish boyband were worldwide stars – but, as Sky’s documentary reveals, Walsh failed to shield two of its members from anguish – The Telegraph ****
